Cancer Public Safety Announcement

Biology, Language Arts,

& Wellness/Fitness

The goal of this project was to create a public safety announcement (PSA) to inform individuals of precautions they should take to prevent the development of different types of cancer. Through our biology class, we first learned how and why cancer forms in individuals and current methods of treatment. Through our wellness and fitness class, we learned about methods to take care of our health to prevent such diseases. Through our language arts class, we wrote letters to individuals of our choice explaining the biology of cancer and ways to prevent its development. The letter allowed us to document and reflect on what we had learned.

After gaining a deep understanding of the issue, we partnered with Premier Health to create a PSA. My group was specifically responsible for creating a PSA discussing how to prevent skin cancer. For this project, I was an assistant director, responsible for making sure tasks were divided up among the group and the general organization of executing the project. I was also one of the actors for the final PSA.

This was a unique experience as not only did we learn about the cellular reasoning for the occurrence of cancer but also learned about the process of visual production. One of the most challenging parts of this project was to properly use production tools such as microphones and cameras. We learned how to adapt our studio. such as by customizing the type of lighting used, to accommodate different actors' features. It was gratifying to learn that our PSA's would actually be used at Premier Health hospital and could inform patients of how to protect themselves from the devastating impacts of cancer.
